Excellent subject!

Paul Graham just wrote an excellent essay advising younger entrepreneurs to design products they would want to use themselves. Quoting from www.paulgraham.com/organic.html: "The worst ideas we see at Y Combinator are from young founders making things they think other people will want."

The smartest entrepreneurs of all ages work out situations where they have not much personally at risk (except pride and sleep) and potentially unlimited upside. For a younger person this might mean keeping your day job while working on a side project. For a more experienced person, this often means getting funding and a great team organized before starting.

Great points.... I would add a slightly non-intuitive point - and that is to choose your customers as well. If you're a startup looking to grow a viable product, some customers can ultimately be a drag on innovation for a number of reasons outside the scope of this post.

When we're rolling out products, we rely on "A team" customers who see our vision but don't expect the world from us on day 1.
